Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) Indonesia Season 18 officially begins today, launching a new chapter for Indonesia's leading MLBB esports league as the country enters Independence Week.
This season will bring MPL Indonesia closer to fans across the country through the "Road to Surabaya", with Surabaya confirmed as the host city for the Season 18 Playoffs. During the same period, MLBB Championship Tour Southeast Asia (SEA) expands Indonesia's Road to M8 by giving the MDL ID champion a newly earned route to compete for an additional opportunity at the M8 World Championship.

Surabaya will host the MPL Indonesia Season 18 Playoffs, marking the next step in MPL Indonesia's growth beyond Jakarta. The "Road to Surabaya" will serve as the season-long journey from the Regular Season in Jakarta to the Playoffs in East Java, connecting teams and fans through one shared destination. The move reflects MPL Indonesia's wider ambition to grow as a national sports-entertainment platform and bring its biggest moments closer to communities across Indonesia.
"PB ESI appreciates MOONTON Games decision to bring the MPL ID Season 18 Playoffs to Surabaya", said Glorya Famiela Ralahalo, Indonesia National Teams Manager, Pengurus Besar Esports Indonesia (PB ESI). "This initiative aligns with our goal of building esports as a nationwide movement, with more regions represented and involved in its development. The stronger the participation from different parts of Indonesia, the stronger our national esports ecosystem will become."
Martinus H. Manurung, Head of Esports Business Development, MOONTON Games Indonesia, said, "Surabaya and East Java are an important part of MLBB's growth in Indonesia, and bringing the Playoffs there allows us to deliver a major esports experience to more fans. We see this as the beginning of a broader journey to bring MPL ID closer to communities across Indonesia".
MCT SEA expands MLBB's global pathway into Southeast Asia
The launch of MCT SEA marks the MLBB Championship Tour's expansion into Southeast Asia as part of MOONTON Games' wider global esports roadmap. Following the rollout of MCT across other regions, MCT SEA creates a regional qualification structure that provides more Southeast Asian regions with a clear, earned pathway to the M8 World Championship.
For Indonesia, its two direct M8 slots remain unchanged. What is added is a new route for the MDL Indonesia champion to compete for an additional opportunity through MCT SEA.
The development-league champions from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia will first compete in one group, with only one team advancing to the MCT SEA championship phase. That team must then face national champions and top regional contenders from across Southeast Asia, making the pathway fully earned.
To protect competitive integrity, roster rules will apply. MPL teams may move a maximum of three MPL players per season to their affiliated MDL team, while no more than two MPL Experience Players may be fielded in the active five-player lineup in any single game. MDL-to-MPL promotions remain unrestricted to preserve the development pathway.
For teams and academies, MCT SEA gives development players a clearer target beyond the domestic circuit. Edwin Chia, CEO and Founder of Bigetron Esports and Bigetron Academy, said, "This new system gives teams greater motivation to invest in developing their rosters, while opening a pathway for MDL and grassroots teams to reach the international stage. Indonesia has an exceptional pool of talented players, but many still need the right platform to prove themselves."
Built on the region's existing local leagues and qualifiers, the MCT SEA will bring together 12 teams from 11 Southeast Asian markets, divided into four groups. The Group Stage of MCT SEA will take place from 9-10 December.
Celebrating 10 years of MLBB with Indonesia
MPL Indonesia Season 18 also arrives during MLBB's 10th anniversary year, making the season a celebration of the communities that have shaped the game's growth.
Indonesia has played a major role in MLBB's journey over the past decade, from players and fans to professional teams, creators, partners, and esports stakeholders. With the Road to Surabaya and MCT SEA, Season 18 looks ahead to the next chapter: bringing more fans into the live MPL Indonesia experience and giving Indonesia's next generation a pathway to the world stage.
As Indonesia celebrates Independence Day on 17 August, MPL Indonesia Season 18 begins with a message of pride and ambition: from Jakarta to Surabaya, and from Indonesia to M8.
